Economic and Environmental Impacts of Herbicide- Tolerant Transgenic Rice Adoption in California
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study used a static, partial budgeting approach to estimate the potential net benefits of the adoption of herbicide-tolerant transgenic rice in California. Scenarios were developed based on average cost figures across the state using actual pesticide use data and assuming a rice-only rotation, as well as a three-year field study of efficacy of herbicide regimes in the presence of herbicide-resistant watergrass. Results suggest that a management strategy including transgenic varieties could lead to economic benefits for the grower, as well as benefit the environment, given that conventional rice production in California involves heavy use of chemicals. Issues, impacts, and prospects of the first transgenic crops tolerant to a herbicide. The case of glyphosate-tolerant soybean in the USA
Until today, herbicide-tolerant (HT) transgenic crops have been the most widely used type of transgenic crops. In 2008, worldwide, 63% of all agricultural land devoted to transgenic crops involved HT transgenic ones, and the percentage was higher (85%) when the herbicide-tolerant trait was stacked with another. In addition, other HT crops are foreseen within the next five years if we are to bel...
متن کاملEnvironmental and Socio-Economic impacts of Drought from the viewpoint of Guilan Paddy farmers, North of Iran
A comprehensive assessment of drought environmental and socio-economic impacts provides critical information to rational decisions supporting drought mitigation policies and programs. The objectives of this study were to survey environmental and socio-economic impacts of drought in Guilan Province, and prioritize them from the viewpoint of paddy farmers. This study was a descriptive-correlation...
متن کاملThe Economic Impacts of Biotechnology-Based Technological Innovations
Global adoption of transgenic crops reached 67.7 million hectares in 2003 from 2.8 million in 1996. Delivery has occurred almost entirely through the private sector and adoption has been rapid in areas where the crops addressed serious production constraints and where farmers had access to the new technologies. Three countries (USA, Argentina and Canada), three crops (soybean, cotton and maize)...
متن کاملDevelopment and Event-specific Detection of Transgenic Glyphosate-resistant Rice Expressing the G2-EPSPS Gene
Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, due to its broad spectrum, low cost, low toxicity, high efficiency, and non-selective characteristics. Rice farmers rarely use glyphosate as a herbicide, because the crop is sensitive to this chemical. The development of transgenic glyphosate-tolerant rice could greatly improve the economics of rice production. Here, we transformed the Pseudomonas fluoresc...
متن کاملTransgenic Rice and Potato Plants Expressing Human Cytochrome P450s Show Cross-tolerance to Herbicides by Detoxifying Them
Transgenic plants expressing various species of the detoxifying enzyme, cytochrome P450 monooxigenase from mammals, were bred by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transgenic plants metabolized exogenous chemicals, including herbicides which they were able to tolerate. Because the enzymes had broad substrate specificity, the transgenic plants showed crosstolerance to several herbicides,...
